If you hold a Texas laser hair removal certificate of registration, your continuing education is a separate requirement from any cosmetology or esthetics license you also hold. It is eight hours, not four, and the rules that govern it live on a different TDLR page — which is exactly why so many registrants get caught short at renewal.
This page is written for people who actually run a handpiece. I have been an active laser hair removal technician since long before I started teaching, and everything below comes out of the treatment room: the settings conversations, the skin-type judgement calls, the paperwork that has to exist before you ever fire a pulse. How many CE hours do you need for laser hair removal renewal in Texas?
Texas requires 8 hours of continuing education to renew an individual laser hair removal certificate of registration. It applies to Apprentice-in-Training, Technician, Senior Technician and Professional registrations alike. TDLR accepts web-based online training for these hours, and the course must include an examination component.

All four individual registration levels carry the same eight-hour CE obligation at renewal. Facility registrations are separate and are not CE-based.

How the exam works
Because this is web-based training, TDLR requires an examination component — so the course ends with one. Expect scenario questions rather than definition-matching: a client presents with X, your device is set to Y, what do you change and why. You will be able to review the modules before you sit it.
How your certificate of completion is issued
The provider issues your certificate of completion within 15 days of the course end date, and you keep it for 2 years. TDLR is specific about what has to be on it — for laser hair removal training the certificate must include:
- your name as the licensee or trainee
- the date you completed the training
- the course title
- the provider name
- the number of completed hours

Frequently asked questions
Does Texas laser hair removal CE require an exam?
Yes. When laser hair removal continuing education is delivered as web-based online training, TDLR requires the course to include an examination component. A course that lets you click through slides and print a certificate without any assessment does not satisfy the requirement, and the hours can be rejected at renewal.
Can laser hair removal CE be completed online in Texas?
Yes. TDLR states that web-based online training is accepted for laser hair removal continuing education, provided the course includes an examination component. That is why this entire track is built as self-paced online modules — no travel, no seat time in a classroom, and no scheduling around a live webinar.
Do my cosmetology CE hours count toward my laser renewal?
No. The two requirements are separate. Barbering and cosmetology licensees complete 4 hours every two years, while an individual laser hair removal registration requires 8 hours. If you hold both credentials you complete both sets of hours, and each provider issues its own certificate of completion.
