Texas added this to the allowed elective list because the work invites it. Clients talk. A standing appointment with the same person every six weeks for a decade turns into something closer to a confidence than a service, and nobody trained you for that.
It also points inward. Burnout, chronic pain, financial pressure and isolation are ordinary features of a booth rental career, and this elective is one of the few places the profession addresses them at all.
What this hour covers
- Why an emotionally loaded conversation is a normal part of a service career
- Listening without taking on the role of a counselor — where the line sits and why it protects both of you
- Recognizing distress, and language that helps versus language that closes a door
- Texas crisis and referral resources you can actually hand someone
- Burnout, compassion fatigue and boundaries in a booth rental or solo practice
- Protecting your own footing after a heavy appointment
Who this applies to
Texas barbering and cosmetology licensees who owe 2 elective hours — which is everyone under 15 years licensed. If you are at 15 years or more, your electives are waived and you do not need this one.

Questions about this hour
Does mental health awareness count for Texas cosmetology CE?
Yes, as an elective. TDLR's allowed elective topics for barbering and cosmetology continuing education include mental health awareness. It applies to the 2 elective hours, not to the required sanitation and human trafficking hours.
Can I use mental health awareness for all 4 of my hours?
No. Two of your four hours are fixed — 1 hour sanitation and 1 hour human trafficking awareness. An elective can only fill the remaining 2.
Is this a counseling qualification?
No, and no CE hour is. It is awareness training. It does not license or qualify anyone to provide mental health treatment, diagnosis or counseling, and it should never be presented that way.
Check this against TDLR yourself
Do not take our word for any hour requirement. The requirement is published by the department: TDLR — Barbering and Cosmetology Continuing Education. You can also confirm which providers are approved to deliver Texas CE on the TDLR approved CE provider list.
