Nail services generate more sanitation citations and more genuine client injuries than most people in the industry want to admit, and almost all of it traces back to two things: implements and foot spas. Those are the two things this track refuses to gloss over.
The required hours are the same as any other barbering and cosmetology licensee. The difference is that the electives are spent on nails — not on a generic "salon safety" module rewritten for the fifth time.
How many CE hours does a Texas manicurist need to renew?
Texas manicurists renew under the barbering and cosmetology continuing education rules: 4 hours of department-approved CE every two years — 1 hour of sanitation, 1 hour of human trafficking awareness and 2 approved elective hours. Manicurists licensed 15 years or more complete only the 2 required hours.

Sanitation and implement reprocessing — 1 hour
Cleaning before disinfecting, full contact times, porous items that cannot be reused, drill bit handling, and storing clean implements so they stay clean.

Human trafficking awareness — 1 hour
Indicators that appear in nail salon settings, including among coworkers, how to respond safely, and the Texas reporting route.

Elective: pedicure spa and footbath protocols — 1 hour
Screen and inlet cleaning, between-client and end-of-day procedures, biofilm, mycobacterial infection risk, and the logbook inspectors ask to see.

Elective: nail unit health and injury prevention — 1 hour
Recognizing infection and fungal presentations, cuticle and eponychium damage, over-filing and heat spikes, product sensitisation, and when to refuse service or refer.
How the exam works
The course finishes with an examination component, as TDLR requires for online delivery, and one CE hour is 50 minutes of real instruction — so four hours is roughly 200 minutes of content.
How your certificate of completion is issued
The provider issues your certificate of completion within 15 days of the course end date, and you keep it for 2 years. TDLR is specific about what has to be on it — for laser hair removal training the certificate must include:
- your name as the licensee or trainee
- the date you completed the training
- the course title
- the provider name
- the number of completed hours

Frequently asked questions
Can Texas manicurist CE be completed online?
Yes. Approved online coursework satisfies Texas continuing education for barbering and cosmetology licensees, manicurists included, and this track is delivered as self-paced online modules with an examination component. Always confirm the provider is department-approved before you pay, because unapproved hours will not count at renewal.
Do I need CE if I am renewing late?
Your continuing education obligation does not disappear because a renewal is late — you still complete the required hours, and late renewal may carry additional fees or steps set by TDLR. Check your specific situation on the TDLR barbering and cosmetology continuing education page before you renew.
How soon do I get my certificate after finishing a course?
The provider must issue your certificate of completion within 15 days of the course end date. You then keep that certificate for 2 years. Confirm the certificate lists your name, the completion date, the course title, the provider name and the hour count before you file it away.
Same-day reporting, same-day certificate
TDLR gives a provider 7 days to file your completed hours electronically and 15 days to get your certificate to you. We do not use that window. When you pass, we file your hours with TDLR the same business day and your certificate of completion is in your email that same day.
