Texas barber continuing education, online

Texas put barbering and cosmetology under one set of continuing education rules, so a barber and a cosmetology operator owe the identical four hours at renewal. What barbers almost never get is coursework written for a barbershop: clippers, shears, straight razors, hot towels and a chair that turns over every twenty minutes.

The two required hours are fixed by rule, and this track keeps them specific to barbering practice. The elective hours are spent on the things that actually put a shop at risk — blade and clipper reprocessing, shaving and skin integrity, and the client you should turn away.

Barbers and cosmetologists complete the same continuing education under the Texas barbering and cosmetology rules, and the 15-year exception applies the same way to both.

What the modules cover

1. 01

   Sanitation for the barbershop — 1 hour

   Clipper and trimmer blade reprocessing, shear and comb handling, full disinfectant contact times, single-use razor blades and neck strips, capes and linens, and station reset on a fast-turning chair.

2. 02

   Human trafficking awareness — 1 hour

   What the Texas requirement exists for, the indicators visible from a barber chair, responding without escalating risk to the person in front of you, and the correct reporting route.

3. 03

   Elective: shaving, skin integrity and bloodborne exposure — 1 hour

   Straight and safety razor work, nicks and cuts, hot towel hygiene, ingrown hair and razor bumps, and exactly what to do when skin is broken mid-service.

4. 04

   Elective: client screening and Texas shop rules — 1 hour

   Scalp and skin conditions that mean you decline or refer, chemical and color service screening, and the recordkeeping and posting expectations an inspector checks.

How the exam works

The course closes with an examination component, as TDLR requires for online delivery, and one CE hour in Texas is 50 minutes of real instruction — so four hours is roughly 200 minutes of content, not four clock hours of clicking.

How your certificate of completion is issued

The provider issues your certificate of completion within 15 days of the course end date, and you keep it for 2 years. TDLR is specific about what has to be on it — for laser hair removal training the certificate must include:

• your name as the licensee or trainee
• the date you completed the training
• the course title
• the provider name
• the number of completed hours

Frequently asked questions

Same-day reporting, same-day certificate

TDLR gives a provider 7 days to file your completed hours electronically and 15 days to get your certificate to you. We do not use that window. When you pass, we file your hours with TDLR the same business day and your certificate of completion is in your email that same day.
