How many CE hours do I need to renew my Texas cosmetology license?
You need 4 hours of department-approved continuing education every two years: 1 hour of sanitation, 1 hour of human trafficking awareness and 2 hours of approved electives. The only exception is long-tenured licensees — at 15 years or more you owe just the 2 required hours.
Esthetician, eyelash extension specialist and manicurist licenses renew under the same barbering and cosmetology framework, so the same four-hour structure applies to them.
How many CE hours for laser hair removal renewal in Texas?
Renewing an individual laser hair removal certificate of registration takes 8 hours of continuing education — double the cosmetology requirement. Apprentice-in-Training, Technician, Senior Technician and Professional registrations all carry the same eight-hour obligation at renewal.
Hold both a cosmetology license and a laser registration? You complete both sets of hours. Neither one absorbs the other, and each provider issues its own certificate.
Do I still need 4 hours of CE if I've had my license 15 years?
No — at 15 years or more licensed you complete only 2 hours: the sanitation hour and the human trafficking awareness hour. The two elective hours drop away. Below 15 years, the full four hours are required with no partial reduction.
The reduction is tied to how long the license has actually been held, so check your original issue date if you are near the threshold.
Online delivery and exams
Can I do my TDLR continuing education online?
Yes. Approved online coursework counts toward Texas continuing education, and TDLR states directly that web-based online training is accepted for laser hair removal CE when the course includes an examination component. The provider itself must be department-approved for the hours to count.

Does Texas laser hair removal CE require an exam?
For online delivery, yes. TDLR accepts web-based laser hair removal training on the condition that the course includes an examination component. A course that ends with a print button and no assessment does not satisfy the rule, and those hours can be refused at renewal.
Treat the presence of a real exam as a quality signal when you are comparing providers.
How long is one CE hour in Texas?
A Texas CE hour is 50 minutes of actual instruction. Four hours means roughly 200 minutes of content and eight hours roughly 400. If a provider offers to clear four hours in half an hour, the arithmetic tells you what you are buying.
The 50-minute definition is the single most useful consumer-protection fact in the Texas CE rules.
Certificates and records
How fast will my hours be reported to TDLR?
The same business day you pass. TDLR allows a provider 7 days to file completions electronically and 15 days to deliver your certificate; we commit to doing both on the day you finish. Reporting is the provider's responsibility, not yours.
This commitment begins operating the day TDLR issues our provider and course numbers, and it matters most if you are renewing close to your expiration date.
How long do I have to keep my CE certificate?
Two years. The provider must issue your certificate of completion within 15 days of the course end date, and you are responsible for retaining it for 2 years afterwards. If TDLR asks you to substantiate your hours, that certificate is what you produce.
Keep a scanned copy somewhere you will still be able to find in two years, not only the paper original.
What has to be on a Texas CE certificate of completion?
Five items: your name as trainee or licensee, the date completed, the course title, the provider name and the number of completed hours. TDLR is explicit that if a provider's certificate lacks that information, the CE hours will not be accepted.
Check it on the day it arrives. A missing hour count is a five-minute fix in week one and a serious problem a year later.
Can I take the same CE course twice for credit?
No. Texas does not allow credit for the same course twice, so repeating identical coursework in a new renewal cycle earns nothing. Choose different approved topics each cycle — which is, reasonably enough, the entire purpose of continuing education.
Keep a simple list of what you completed and when; it makes the next cycle's choices obvious.
Paying for your course
What payment methods will you accept?
Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover; Apple Pay and Google Pay; Affirm, Afterpay and Klarna for buy now, pay later; and ACH direct debit, Cash App, Zelle and Venmo for bank and mobile transfers. Cards and wallets are processed by Square.
Nothing is collected today. Course fees are charged only once TDLR issues our provider and course numbers and enrollment opens.
Will you ever ask for my card number by phone or email?
No. Payment happens only inside the secure checkout on this website. We do not take card numbers by phone, by email or through the waitlist form, and we never ask for your Social Security number to enroll.
If anyone contacts you claiming to be us and asks for a card number or an SSN, treat it as a scam and check our verification page.

What changed with Texas cosmetology CE on September 1, 2025?
TDLR adopted new continuing education requirements effective September 1, 2025, restructuring what barbering and cosmetology licensees complete at renewal — the sanitation hour, the human trafficking awareness hour and the elective hours. Confirm your current obligation if your last renewal predates that date.
Rules move. Bookmark the TDLR page rather than relying on any summary, including this one.
How do I check that a CE provider is really approved?
Look the provider up on the official TDLR approved continuing education provider list before you pay. An approved provider appears there with a provider number. If a provider cannot show you a number that matches that list, the hours you buy may be worthless at renewal.
