Esthetics CE is too often generic salon content with the word "facial" dropped in twice. If you spend your day with a client reclined, draped, and mid-extraction, the sanitation hour should be about your room, your steamer, your spatulas and your linens.
I work in skin and laser every week, and I write these hours the way I would want to receive them: specific, current, and useful before your next appointment. Nothing here is padding to reach a minute count.
How many CE hours does a Texas esthetician need?
Texas estheticians renew on the same barbering and cosmetology schedule: 4 hours of department-approved continuing education every two years, made up of 1 hour of sanitation, 1 hour of human trafficking awareness and 2 approved elective hours. Licensees of 15 years or more complete only the 2 required hours.

Sanitation for the treatment room — 1 hour
Steamer and hot-towel hygiene, extraction tools, spatula and jar discipline, disposables, bed and linen turnover, and disinfectant contact times that actually get honoured on a busy day.

Human trafficking awareness — 1 hour
The indicators that surface in a private treatment room, trauma-aware language, and how to respond and report without putting the client at greater risk.

Elective: client screening and contraindications — 1 hour
Actives and acids, recent procedures, medications that thin or photosensitise skin, and reading a consultation form critically instead of filing it.

Elective: post-treatment care and adverse reactions — 1 hour
Managing reactive skin, pigment change, barrier damage from over-exfoliation, documentation, and the referral conversation.
How the exam works
The course ends with an examination component, as TDLR requires for online delivery. Questions are scenario-based: a client with this history books this service, what do you adjust?
How your certificate of completion is issued
The provider issues your certificate of completion within 15 days of the course end date, and you keep it for 2 years. TDLR is specific about what has to be on it — for laser hair removal training the certificate must include:
- your name as the licensee or trainee
- the date you completed the training
- the course title
- the provider name
- the number of completed hours

Can I do my Texas esthetician CE online?
Yes. Texas continuing education for barbering and cosmetology licensees, including estheticians, may be completed through approved online coursework, and this track is built as self-paced online modules with an examination component. Only hours from a department-approved provider count, so confirm the provider is on the TDLR list before enrolling.
How long is one CE hour in Texas?
One continuing education hour in Texas equals 50 minutes of actual instruction. That means a four-hour course represents roughly 200 minutes of real content, not four clock hours of clicking. A provider that promises to finish your four hours in 45 minutes is not delivering the instruction the rule describes.
Do esthetician and cosmetology CE hours overlap?
The sanitation and human trafficking awareness hours satisfy the same statutory requirement across barbering and cosmetology license types, so you do not complete them twice for one renewal cycle. Your elective hours are where you specialise — which is why this track spends them entirely on skin-care practice.
Same-day reporting, same-day certificate
TDLR gives a provider 7 days to file your completed hours electronically and 15 days to get your certificate to you. We do not use that window. When you pass, we file your hours with TDLR the same business day and your certificate of completion is in your email that same day.
