Cosmetology renewal in Texas is a two-year cycle, and the continuing education attached to it is small enough that most operators leave it until the last fortnight. That is fine — as long as the hours you buy are real hours from a provider whose certificate will hold up.
I have held a cosmetology operator license since 2009. Four hours is not a lot of time to teach anything, so this track is written to spend it on the things that change how you work on Monday: what your sanitation practice looks like when you are running late, and what human trafficking awareness actually asks of someone behind a chair.
How many CE hours do you need to renew a Texas cosmetology license?
Texas cosmetology licensees complete 4 hours of department-approved continuing education every two years to renew. The four hours break down as 1 hour of sanitation, 1 hour of human trafficking awareness and 2 hours of approved elective topics. If you have been licensed 15 years or more, only 2 hours are required.

Disinfection versus sterilisation, contact times that people routinely cut short, implement handling, laundry, station reset between clients, and the specific findings that come up in Texas salon inspections.

What the Texas requirement is for, the indicators that are visible from a salon chair, how to respond without escalating risk to the person in front of you, and who to contact.

Elective: infection control beyond the basics — 1 hour
Bloodborne pathogen exposure, nicks and cuts, product contamination, multi-use containers, and building a protocol you can actually follow on a full book.

Elective: chemical service safety and client screening — 1 hour
Patch testing, ventilation, layering services safely, documenting client history, and knowing when to decline or refer.
How the exam works
Each online course closes with an examination component, and the pacing assumes real instruction time rather than a timer you wait out. One CE hour in Texas equals 50 minutes of actual instruction, so a four-hour course is roughly 200 minutes of content.
How your certificate of completion is issued
The provider issues your certificate of completion within 15 days of the course end date, and you keep it for 2 years. TDLR is specific about what has to be on it — for laser hair removal training the certificate must include:
- your name as the licensee or trainee
- the date you completed the training
- the course title
- the provider name
- the number of completed hours

Frequently asked questions
Do I still need 4 hours of CE if I have had my license 15 years?
No. If you have been licensed for 15 years or more, Texas requires only 2 hours of continuing education at renewal — the 1 hour of sanitation and the 1 hour of human trafficking awareness. The 2 elective hours are not required of you. Everyone under 15 years licensed completes the full 4 hours.
What changed with Texas cosmetology CE on September 1, 2025?
TDLR adopted new continuing education requirements that took effect September 1, 2025, restructuring what licensees must complete at renewal — including the sanitation hour, the human trafficking awareness hour, and the elective hours. If your last renewal predates that date, confirm your current obligation on the TDLR CE page before you buy hours.
Can I take the same CE course twice for credit?
No. Texas does not allow you to receive continuing education credit for the same course twice. If you completed a particular sanitation course in your last renewal cycle, repeating that identical course will not earn you credit again — choose different approved coursework for the new cycle.

TDLR gives a provider 7 days to file your completed hours electronically and 15 days to get your certificate to you. We do not use that window. When you pass, we file your hours with TDLR the same business day and your certificate of completion is in your email that same day.
