Do I have to travel to Houston to take these CE hours?
No. Nothing requires travel. The hours are online and self-paced, which matters more in El Paso than almost anywhere else in Texas.
How many CE hours does a El Paso licensee need?
The same as anywhere in Texas: 4 hours at each barbering and cosmetology renewal — 1 hour sanitation, 1 hour human trafficking awareness and 2 elective hours. At 15 years or more licensed, only the 2 required hours. A laser hair removal registration carries a separate 8 hours.
Are the rules different in El Paso than in the rest of Texas?
No. Continuing education requirements for these licenses are set by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation at state level and apply identically in El Paso, El Paso County and every other part of the state. Cities do not set their own CE hour counts for these licenses.
Can I check that a CE provider is legitimate before paying?
Yes, and you should. TDLR publishes the approved continuing education provider list with provider numbers, and you can look up any license on the department's own license search.
